Bullying: Using Drama To Teach About Bullying
K-1
Bully Or Buddy?
What should we say to the Grouchy Ladybug (by Eric Carle), when she asks us, “Hey you, you wanna fight?” This workshop is a series of activities that enable students to “practice and play out” this scenario through role playing, improvisation, narrative pantomime and puppetry. Students will learn how to stand brave, feel brave and say brave things. They will practice what they will do if someone is picking on them. They will begin to develop a plan. A comprehensive multi-day residency is also available if you wish to concentrate on one grade. Please ask for more information.
Grades 2-3
You Can Be An Ally
The opposite of a bystander is an ally.
How come so many people are scared to speak up? How can we change that? What should we do if we are a witness to bullying? Students will engage in role play and improvisational activities to explore this sensitive subject matter and begin to assess their own behaviors and develop a plan to be an ally. This workshop utilizes two books; Nobody Knew What To Do, by Becky Ray McCain and Say Something, by Peggy Moss. A comprehensive multi-day residency is also available if you wish to concentrate on one grade. Please ask for more information.
Grades 4-8
Words Can’t Bring Me Down
Bullying is a complex issue. It is not easy to solve. It begins with honest communication. During this workshop students will participate in unique activities that will make them think about meanness and bullying and what roles they might have played in these challenging social scenarios. Students will reflect on their own social attitudes while they explore subjects as labels, the social and moral dilemma of telling, aka ratting and snitching and the stigma attached to the words. Note: This workshop has brought some magical moments to schools. One such time was when Taj, a 5th grade boy apologized, completely unsolicited, to a girl in his class for calling her names and picking on her. She accepted his apology and the class was in awe. It was an inspiring moment and we all felt we came a little closer. A comprehensive multi-day residency is also available if you wish to concentrate on one grade. Please ask for more information.
